Soundtrack to My Life

"Kid Cudi was born in Cleveland, Ohio and lived in the diverse upper class suburb of Shaker Heights. Just prior to receiving his GED he attended Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio and also Solon High School in Solon, Ohio. His career took off after he moved to Brooklyn to pursue his music, and when he released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in collaboration with New York street wear brand 10. Deep as a free download in 2008. The mixtape has had so much continued success that on May 18, 2009 10. Deep announced they were going to be doing a re-release of the “Up There” t-shirt and hard copies A Kid Named Cudi mixtape in their webstore on May 20, 2009 at 12:00 PM EST. Shortly after the shirt went up for sale the server crashed due to heavy traffic of fans wanting to buy the t-shirt and the mixtape. He also has collaborated with Kanye West in his groundbreaking album 808's and Heartbreak singing with him on the track "Welcome to Heartbreak".

This is about all I know about Kid Cudi.

But I do know that the following song has been stuck in my head now for two months. Its the theme song to a new show that I'm watching called World of Jenks (which if you haven't seen yet I highly suggest). But this song is the theme and well its pretty great. And the more and more I listen to this "Kid" rap I love it.

He seems to be one of the only rappers left who is actually rapping about real issues not about money and fame.

I'm downloading his mix-tape now. We will see how this goes....

For now listen here.

Broken Bells - The Ghost Inside

Ok no secret here that I love Broken Bells. They easily have put out one of the top 5 albums of the last year. I really just am loving everything that these guys are doing right now.

And well the following video is no different. Check out Mad Men star Christina Hendricks (who is awesome in everything she does...) in the following video for my favorite track "The Ghost Inside". I really hope that we get some more music from these guys soon!

Arcade Fire - MSG

Check out this cool video taken at MSG of the Arcade Fire concert there earlier this year.

Gets me super excited to be in this space for New Years Eve!

Fistful of Mercy

On Monday night my main man Conan O'Brien made his triumphant return to late night t.v. and finally my late nights were saved. You see there is only so much of the Leno/Letterman combo that I could take before I just stopped watching all together. But now us young folk are saved by Mr. O'Brien.

I don't know what it is that makes Conan so funny to me. Maybe its his lack of taking anything seriously. His immature jokes. His constantly bouncing around during the monologue. There is something about this man that keeps me tuning in every single night.

So yeah I was a little excited for Conans return. Also with Conan's return is the return of some great musical guests. Conan a musician himself finds some of the greatest artists to come and play on his show and last night was no different. Fistful of Mercy is Ben Harpers new project, and well they are fantastic.

I will admit that I haven't heard much of them (besides their name) before the performance last night but I was blown away. Until I have a video of last nights performance you will just have to do with this.

I promise it won't be the last you hear from them.

Happy Veterans Day!

Bowersox New Album!

Crystal Bowersox, Farmer?s Daughter, Album Cover
I will say this right here.

I have never before bought an album from someone who was on American Idol.

Yet that is about to change. I will be buying the debut album from my favorite Crystal Bowersox called "Farmers Daughter". I haven't heard anything from it. Shit I don't even know when it comes out. But when it does, I will buy it.

Reason being. I think she is very talented.... and smart. Smart enough to realize the machine that is American Idol and sign herself on to it. Was she ever going to win... probably not, I mean come on she has dreads. Do you think America is ready for that? But it didn't matter. Week after week she took to that stupid stage and showed America what she was made of. And now she has an album. Bravo. Bravo.

Be Thankful

And yes I'm making up for the last few days with a ridiculous amount of posts today.

Because there is just too many great things in this world not to share.

Snow White....Remix?

Is it possible to bust a move while listening to the sounds of Snow White?

Well, I think it is. Check it out.

GENIUS!

Michael Jacksons...NEW Album Cover

'Michael' by Michael Jackson

Yup. That is it. In all its glory. I post the image large so you can really see all that is going on here.

Its basically a painting by Kadir Nelson an it manages to squeeze in numerous iconic and memorable pictures of the "King of Pop". If you want the entire breakdown please visit this website HERE. NPR (as always) does a fantastic job breaking down all that you see...and some things you may have overlooked.

Here are some highlights:

-It includes 16 images of Michael himself. Everything from BAD Michael to "We Are The World" Michael.

-The central image of Jackson is being crowned by two cherubs, one black, one white. A particular song comes to mind.

-Weekly World Something Or Other tabloid cover

-Bubbles fill the bottom left of the image. This seems like a nod to Jackson's pet chimp

Its a very interesting way to memorialize one of the greatest artists of all time... but hey to each their own.

Now we just have to wait to hear the new music....

I Love Mike Gordon

Just found this picture of Phish bassist Mike Gordon... Love it!

I Want ELLEN's Job

Okay, I know I know I love my job more than most. But there is still one job out there that I would take in a heart beat. Every afternoon when I get home from work and start to prepare dinner I turn on Ellen's talk show and usually end up burning dinner because I always forget whats on the stove and find myself on the couch laughing at her antics.

She has to be having some of the most fun on television these days. She has a great attitude, her guests obviously love going on to her show, and well she is one funny lady. There is one segment of her show that I do love more than most. Its when she scares her guests. Sounds simple. But its genius.

Check out the clips below and look at Ellen's smiling face throughout it all and think... does it get any better than this?

NYC Marathon

This weekend I traveled back up to NJ to watch my (not so little) brother compete in his first NYC Marathon... and well he KILLED IT. I don't know if I could have been more impressed with him. He finished in a great time. He was smiling the entire time. He went out for beers with us after the game and cheered our Jets. It was a great day.

So here is a great video to go along with it.

Back on the Road

Well around noon today I get back in my car and travel that same road I took Monday afternoon right back to New Jersey. This time there will be no (live) music but the purpose is almost as fun. My little brother Rick is running his first marathon and well you know how they say go big or go home. Well thats Rick for you. Hes running probably what is the biggest marathon in the country. The ING NYC Marathon.

You will never find me running a marathon. Nope. Not in the cards. But I will be a supportive sister and hold my sign and buy the kid a beer after he finishes. Could you imagine running 26 miles? Yeah me either.

But gooooo Rick!

See you Tuesday!

Phish - Alpine Valley DVD/CD Set

Releasing just in time for the holidays... ~hint hint~

From Phish.com:  "On August 14th and 15th, 2010 Phish played their 12th and 13th shows at Alpine Valley Music Theater - all 2-night stands since 2003. "Alpine" as it is affectionately known, is a steeply-sloping amphitheater with a big lawn and raucous crowd perpetually bursting with energy right in the band's faces due to the angles of the place.

The nearly three hours of music was recorded that night using 57 channels of digital multi-track and carefully mixed and mastered in 5.1 Dolby surround and PCM stereo. The video was a 7-camera shoot (16:9 widescreen), recorded and post-edited in High Definition. This box set features the complete August 14th, 2010 performance on 2-DVDs, as well as 2-CDs, and bonus video featuring highlights from the following night, August 15th, 2010."

Phun With Friends - Day Three Halloween

"The time is near the missions clear...its later than you think"

Day Three - Halloween

The time was here. After an absolutely amazing Saturday night we woke up Sunday morning around 9 a.m. to a knock on our door. Brianna's sister had made the trip overnight from Hampton, VA with a few friends to join in the fun. This early morning visit shifted us into "halloween mode" and forced us to get up, get fed (and as Brianna assured us...at least two meals today) and start enjoying the last of our days in Atlantic City.

As we made our way downstairs to breakfast we were already starting to see kids look for tickets for that evenings show. The offers were just ridiculous... I think I even heard "grand for your extras". The anticipation for the Halloween show that night was hitting an all time high. After the "Get the Led out" show from Saturday night all bets were off for what album they were going to play. I think I now know why Phish's halloween shows are so fantastic. Its super impressive how a band of that magnitude could keep a secret like that from obsessive fans a mere hours before the show. The anticipation was part of the fun. I now understand...

After a delicious breakfast of taylor ham egg and cheese (my NJ favorite) it was time for some afternoon relaxation before what was sure to be an epic night. We wandered around the casino, we went to visit the indoor pool, I took some cool photos of the beach. We were just having a great time spending quality time with each other, because well... it never happens.

Before we knew it we looked at our watches and it was around 3pm. It was go time. Time to get the outfits on (picture on top) and make our way down the Boardwalk for some music! We hurried back upstairs where the madness started to take form. Now we had all been planning our costumes for a while now. Collectively I think we were all a bit too excited over Michelle's bunny outfit. I mean the thing was amazing. And it was shorts! Great score M! My outfit took a little bit of assembly. Breaking 60 glow sticks is a lot tougher then it looks. Thats right. I was a glowbot. I had a black jumpsuit with a bunch of brackets strapped to it. I snapped the glow sticks into place in the shape of a robot. Turned the lights off and BAM. Glowbot.

So we were ready and set for Halloween 2010. We were the Glowbot, Mad Hatter, Bunny and Cheshire Cat. And for all who know us, each one fit us perfectly! We made our way down through the casino. Stopping at some slot machines to test our luck and to take more silly pictures. And then finally made our way out to the boardwalk. This place was madness. Take all those people looking for tickets earlier in the day and times it by about 25 and thats what you had at around 5pm in Atlantic City. Pure insanity. I strapped my tickets down in my bag for safety and continued to move through the crowd towards the...wait whats that? SKEE-BALL. We obviously had to stop and play, win tickets, buy stupid little prizes, laugh. I mean this trip was completely ridiculous so why couldn't we be?

After skee-ball we made our way back to the Trump liquid bar from Saturday night and just got a table and started to people watch. People's costumes were hilarious. I saw a girl dressed as the "tea potty", we had pac man and all of his ghosts, lots of Woody's from Toy Story, and well I swear to god I saw Larry Bird. Not really, but this guy looked just like him! Everywhere I looked I couldn't stop smiling. People were getting antsy with anticipation for the evenings events. What will they play? Will there be horns? How do we not know anything!?! Ahhhhh!

So after a few hours at the liquid bar we were R2R -  ready to rage! We slowly made our way through the boardwalk which at this time was almost at max capacity. There were people everywhere. 90% of whom were still searching for that miracle ticket. We slowly bobbed and weaved through the crowds and made our way to the venue gates. Now let me say this. Security was hilarious during halloween night. I mean really how are they going to check for example: a huge box of wine. Yes a girl dressed as a box of wine. Who I later found out snuck in 6 liters of wine for her and her friends to drink! So yeah security was a cake walk.

We made our way inside to our seats (which were pretty perfect if I do say so myself). They were straight back from the stage. Perfect view, perfect sound, perfect lights! We are ready to rock!

After browsing through the PhishBill we found out that Phish was going to be covering the classic album "Waiting for Columbus" by the old school jam band Little Feat. Many of the heads in the crowd didn't know the album or understand that they were about to be schooled by Phish in music lesson. You see Phish is very deliberate in what they do, and after reading the literature written in the program it was easy to see why they had picked this album to play for their musical costume. That and after going back and listening to this set if you can not see where Phish gets many of its playing styles you my friend are deaf. Its a genius choice.

So we knew what was ahead of us. Two sets of Phish, one set of Phish/Little Feat. Its on.

The shows first set got off to an amazing start when I saw Paige walk across the stage with a key-tar strapped to his chest. He walked right up to the front of the stage and started laying down a version of Frankenstein that I will never forget. It was amazing.

I love Paige. He in my opinion is the most solid player out of the four of these guys. I gained so much respect for him after I read about how he spent his time during the infamous "hiatus". Paige took the time to go back to school, take lessons in all different kinds of piano including a classical class. He learned, he improved. He always knew that they would be coming back and he wasn't going to let himself get dusty. Instead he would improve and force the band to improve with him. Paige for 2010 MVP.

Okay back to the show. The first set raged. They played up Halloween with a nice version of Ghost (a personal live favorite) and basically just rocked and rolled through some pretty intense songs. You could tell they were saving a little for the second set. And that was fine by me. I was here for three sets tonight so my dancing shoes are ready!

Then came the Little Feat set. I will not go into too much detail here because I for one am still realizing the awesomeness that this was and will be able to appreciate it more in a few months, so I'll write about that part of the evening then.

What I will write about though is how they ended the epic Little Feat set. Before the show I had noticed a walkway blocked off around the floor section. It looked to be about 5 feet wide and stretched around the entire venue. I didn't think of it again until the end of the second set when I see the band members grab cowbells from the stage and start a huge party train. All the members of the band including the guest horn section decided it was a fantastic way to end their "musical costume" with a walk around the crowd.

Being straight back we had a great view of the entire walk. It was pretty amazing that they pulled this off. The phans freaked.

The Little Feat set was over. Yet the concert was not. We were still waiting one final set from our boys and well I had a little dream that still needed to come true. While yes, Phish brought the horns out for the Little Feat section of the show, it has always been a dream of mine, a big dream, to see the horns come out and play one original Phish tune. Just once. I needed to see it just once.

As the second set raged on, we all danced hard. We had packed five sets of phish into two days and well our legs were starting to feel it. The clock approached 1:30 A.M. and the show started coming to a close there was only one thing left. The encore. I sat with the rest of the crowd, stretching my already horse lungs to max capacity and screamed for the boys return. And when they came back a little butterfly in my stomach started to flutter. For I saw a man carrying a saxophone. Could it be true?

Yup it was. Phish came out and played probably the most kick ass version of "Julius" that I have ever heard in my entire life. I don't think I could have danced harder if I tried. The bruises on my shins are proof. My checklist was complete.

Old friends reunion- Check. Phish Halloween - Check. Phish with horns - Check.

I can't tell you any other people or place I would have rather spent my last few days... I can only hope that we answered the timely question of "Can I Live While I'm Young?"

Stairway to Phish

This was my view of Saturday nights epic "Get the Led Out" Phish show.

So glad I bought a new camera for the trip!

Check out the video!

Just Saying....

Thats basically how I feel about everything right now. And well I post it here because its a BLOG and the BLOG is MINE.

I can't wait to see how much more our country can be divided in the next two years.

Phun with Friends - Day Two

~Day Two of Phishin in Atlantic City~

We woke up day two in the hotel room in Atlantic City and the weather was just gorgeous outside. Little did I know in those moments that this day would probably go down as one of the top 10 days of my life. Easy.

We got up and motivated and took ourselves downstairs for a late day brunch (which stupidly ended up being our only meal of the day...besides the half cooked pizza after the show). Anyways, we went to brunch where we met up with an old tour friend Christian (hello sir!). The day was off to a good start.

After going back to the room for some relaxation/afternoon drinks it was just about time to start exploring the boardwalk and making our way down to the show. We all got dressed, ready and were off to see some Phish!

As we made our way down the boardwalk we ran into many people searching for tickets. Let me say this. I don't understand the people who would show up to a weekend like this without a ticket. I mean come on. This is a halloween show people, unless you are offering your first born, or the karma train is on your side, you better have your ticket in advance.  That being said the boardwalk was fun. It was great to see the buzz outside the venue and even better was that the Trump's Liquid Bar was literally right next to the venue. This was the spot where a lot of people went to grab a beer before the show.

So this is where the night just kicked off. We got to the liquid bar and were there (NOT stealing beers) for just about 15 minutes from out the corner of our eyes. All of our old friends from college all started walking through the door. One by one a huge assembly of JMU friends had gathered at the bar for drinks/catch up/sharing of excitement.

Picture proof!

This was extremely exciting since the crew of us had easily not been together since graduation in 2004. It was a mini not planned reunion. Reason #452 on why I love traveling to see Phish.

The pre-party was perfect. We were all laughing, dancing, taking pictures. Just trying to live in the moment. Before we knew it showtime was upon us and we all took off down the boardwalk straight to Boardwalk Hall the famed Atlantic City venue (you know the one where all the Miss America pagents were held.... didn't think I knew that did ya).

So as we made our way in through the doors I spotted that there were still posters for sale at the merch stands and I quickly ran towards it and picked one up for myself. I did this knowing that I would not get a poster the following evening and I needed something to mark this epic weekend. Yet again, little did I know that this poster would mark probably the best phish show I have seen with my own eyes. So yeah I'm glad I have it.

We finally are in the doors and ready for what we thought was going to be just a regular Phish show. Wow. That prediction was waaaay off. You see, Saturday nights show was unlike any other Phish show that I have been to in my entire life. To understand let me give you quick background. It had yet to be released what Phish was going to play for their "Musical Costume" on Sunday night so rumors were running wild! The biggest one being that Phish was going to cover a classic Led Zeppelin album. Everyone thought this was true. Even Christian and I talked about it outside before the show as "almost a shoe in". So Saturday we went into the show and wasn't expecting a thing. And this is where Phish is amazing....

The threw a curveball of all curveballs and basically played Led Zeppelin songs throughout the entire night. The went in and out of "Whole Lotta Love" at least five times. They played "Heart Breaker" "Ramble On", "Thank You", "Stairway to Heaven". My brains were on the floor of my section. Nobody knew what was going on. We all screamed, yelled, cried, laughed. We couldn't believe what was going on with my own eyes.

This video basically explains it. When page starts singing at around 9:50 I teared up.

So yeah that actually did happen.

After the show we all had to sit there for a moment and process what actually did happen. I mean not only did Phish basically come out and throw all of our Sunday night predictions in our face. I just danced my ass off to two hours of almost perfect music with three of my best friends. I remember turning to someone during the show and actually utter the words "I don't know how I got so lucky....". You see thats how I felt. This show Saturday made the last four months completely worth it and we had not even touched the Halloween show yet! How could that be!?!

We returned to our hotel room. Passed the go-go dancers at the bar. Went directly for the whiskey/beer and tried to process what we all had seen. We were spent. We danced too hard. Screamed too loud. Our legs were not responding. We passed out face down still with another 24 hours ahead of us to have fun.

Day two was filled with old friends, fantastic music, beautiful weather and the feeling that "I can't believe I get to do this all again tomorrow". I would say it was a pretty epic day.

Phun with Friends - Day One.

I would like to tell you all a story about four best friends and a trip to see a band called Phish.
This will also be broken into sections.

It was just about four months ago that Phish announced their Halloween run of 2010. When the announcement came the first email came out. Michelle had grabbed a room for the three nights at the Tropicana so no matter what happens with the tickets, we will at least have a room. The next few weeks were followed by ticket stress. Some landed lottery tickets, some on ticketmaster, and others just wheeled and dealed their way into what was easily the hardest Phish ticket in the year of 2010. In the end the mission was complete. Four girls, two nights of music, three nights of a hotel. We are in!

The next few months our days were filled with emails. We would sit at work and try and figure out what album they may cover on Halloween, what our guesses for openers would be, costume ideas, discussion of their current tour. If it was Phish related we talked about it. You see its a combination of the excitement of the music and the experience. We all had not been together the four of us to see a show in YEARS. YEAAAAARS! This was going to be an epic trip (not only for me because it was my first Halloween show) but for us all because it was a mini vacation with friends to Atlantic City.

So finally the time came on Friday for us to all pack up our things and "get in the car and cruise the land of the brave and free". Beth and I started in Richmond, driving to DC to pick up Michelle. (We only had two stopping points along the way...I forgot the tickets and Beth forgot her purse....we were a tad excited). So we get to DC after work get M and we are off to Dulles Airport to pick up Ms. Brianna who was currently flying over from San Diego. Yup San Diego... thats dedication folks.

So at around 9pm we finally make it to Dulles pick up Brianna proceed to get lost leaving DC and finally are on the road towards the promise land that is Atlantic City.

We drove until about 1:00 A.M. when we hit the mecca that is A.C. We slowly made our way to our hotel for the weekend... the Tropicana and started to settle in. To all unaware there was a Phish show that Friday night that we collectively decided to skip to save funds/travel. So by the time we got to our hotel it was already filled to the brim with a bunch of Phish kids. And I mean...filled!

We made our way through this maze that disguises  itself as a hotel and got to our room.

We started to make ourselves at home right away and tried to catch up with the rest of the kids in the hotel. Thats when we remembered it was Atlantic City and well the bars are open real late! We made our way downstairs and found our home the bar, until we finally started to realize that this weekend was going to be epic.

We finally made our way back to the room and crashed hard. Day one complete.

Rolling Stone - Important Covers of the 90s

A special feature over at rollingstone.com today is their "Important Covers of the 1990s". Now being a child that grew up in the 90s many of these covers I distinctly remember, and well they were groundbreaking. So much better then the covers the magazine has been putting out as of late. To be honest I canceled my subscription when the girls of the MTV show The Hills was on the cover... the reason for this has still has not been explained to me.

So here are some of the favorite covers from the 90s that I enjoyed...

Photos of the Week - Phish Halloween

So today as I try to recover from what was easily the best two nights of music I have ever seen in my life. I was also able to cross off two big items on my Phish bucket list: Halloween show and HORNS. Take a look at some of these pictures from Phish.com from their shows in Atlantic City. (These ones are from the actual Halloween night). Pictures of me and my glowbot outfit will follow.

For now enjoy these.....

Page rocking the key-tar!

During the "Little Feat" set

After a set of "Little Feat" songs the boys took to the crowd to literally do a conga line full of cowbells and horns and walked around the entire audience. Amazing.

Loved seeing this sign!

My pictures and just ridiculous stories to follow.....
