Bad News Wednesday

I'm sorry to start this day on such a sour note, but I'm starting to feel like this will be a big topic of conversation for me over the next few years. I have mentioned many many times before on this blog how I am 100% against the use of holograms to bring deceased artists back to the stage. First 2 Pac, then Freddie Mercury. I was kind of hoping that this trend would just fade into eternity...

It has not.

According to Billboard this morning, both Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix Estates are working on holograms of the artists to premiere at shows.

Jampol who handles the estates of not only Jim and Jimmi but Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Peter Tosh and Rick James suggested that this hologram would be part of a multimedia concert experience. The show could also include walls pixelated like giant TV screens, along with the use of lasers, lights, high quality audio and synchronized sound vibrations.

Ugh. Not happy about this...

Is It Time Yet?

Congrats to the LA Kings

Congrats to the LA Kings who brought home their first Stanley Cup in 44 years yesterday. You give us Jets fans hope that one day we will in fact have a championship of our own.

Things On My Mind

I've been way to busy over the last few hours to make a stop here and post anything real. So here are a bunch of random thoughts.

-I hate the layout of this blog right now. Its an eyesore and I really wish I remembered the coding to my old format. This one... not fun.
-I've worked a lot of hours over the last two days, and I still have at least seven hours ahead of me.
-This time next week I will be getting ready for Phish.
-Its 900 degrees in my office
-I'm really looking forward to the taco bar i'm having for dinner tonight.
-I think this video of Conan jumping a 10 Foot Bratwurst is hilarious.

Hope everyone is having a good day.... back to the grind.

Quote of the Day

My girl Fiona Apple is back with new music and is giving some great interviews as well. Today I read a great one over at NPR and I for one have been eagerly waiting for over seven years to hear from this great lady... and now we know why.

"The only reason it take me seven years to do stuff is because I just don't really have a plan. I got a lot of problems, but I'm really good at intuiting what I need to do to be happy with whatever I create. I know when to stop myself, I know when to start, I know when to start, I know when to leave something alone. I guess I just kind of indulge that completely, and so I just take my time."

And here is some new music!

Blog Changes

Found out over the weekend that my blog change a few months back did not go over so well. There is a little problem scrolling through past posts and longer posts. So until I can figure out how to fix that its back to the old format.

Sorry.

Best Call Me Maybe Yet?

I know there has been a lot of parody videos lately of that song that nobody can get out of their heads.... yes that one called "Call Me Maybe". Well out of all of them, the best one I have seen so far is the one released by the girl herself.... with some help from Jimmy Fallon and the Roots.

They are killing it on the mini instruments. ha.

Need a Smile?

You're Welcome.

The Most Famous Crosswalk

These next series of photos have made me laugh. When I was in London, I had one thing on my agenda. To find Abbey Road and to walk the crosswalk just like the Beatles did. After a day of begging when we were finally going to get to go, I accomplished my dream and my vacation was saved.

These next series of pictures are from both tributes and parody's of that famous Beatles album.

This one could be my favorite.

Phish w/ Kenny Rogers

Phish treated the fans watching the live feed last night to a treat..... Yes that is Kenny Rogers... and yes he came out to play with the band. It was awesome.

Also here is the set list from last nights show:

Couch Tour Upgrade!

Hello and welcome back to yet another week. Hope everyone had a nice relaxing weekend and stayed out of the heat down here in Richmond, from what I hear it was a scorcher.

I spent my weekend running around my old stomping grounds up in New Jersey. Numerous people to see, many fun things to do. It was a great trip, but like many of my trips up north it was entirely too short.

While up there my Dad and Step-Mom decided to give me my birthday present early... yay for a new Ipad. I have no idea how it works, but I'm sure after a few days of playing with it I'll have it up like a pro.

Last night I did its first test and watched the Phish live stream from Bonnaroo on it. (Yes it makes dancing around your living room so much easier). This upgrade for my couch tour is much welcomed.

Also on the ride home yesterday I had a chance to listen to the June 7th Worchester show and it was pretty amazing. Especially the following Boogie On jam. Worth the listen! Only a week or so until I am back seeing them live. Yay.

Again, Happy Monday!

Summer Is Here!

Uh-Oh look what came in the mail yesterday!!!

"Lets Get This Show On The Road!"

Oh John Mayer

Oh John Mayer.... You idiot.

I've spent the last week defending your last album, actually giving you credit for getting out of hollywood and just focusing on your music and then you go and do this to me. Guess the you really are the same ass that you have always been, now you just wear a ridiculous hat and claim to be at 'peace' in Montana.

Why in gods green earth would you go to Rolling Stone and critique poor little Taylor Swift. First you break the girls heart, and then you just kick her in the face. Super mature. He spoke about the "abusing" damange that Taylor wrote about their romantic time together called "Dear John" did to him because "he didn't deserve it". It goes on to call her songwriting "cheap" and well... let me give you some quotes from the article.

(John its time to let it go.....)

"I never got an e-mail. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"

"It made me feel terrible, because I didn't deserve it. I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."

"I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting. know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' That's bullshit."

So let me get this straight. You want me to feel bad for you? You want me to hate Taylor for calling you out on being a douchebag? Let me see here....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

You are ridiculous. Guess some people never really do change.

Life Is Short.

At the mere age of 29 I've unfortunately had way too many experiences with losing people way before what I believe their time should be. It has taught me that lesson that life is tragically short and if you want something in this world you need to stand up and take it. It has also taught me not to dwell on the past or on things I can not change and just try to live the best life that I can ever single day.

Last week I was reminded of this again when I had two circumstances that reminded me this awful lesson. Two of my friends from high school are dealing with tragedies that they shouldn't. One friend lost her husband in an awful skydiving accident and the other lost her beloved cousin in a tragic car accident. Both were free loving spirts and both above all loved life.

The picture above is of Marina Keegan. Marina was many things, a political organizer, actress, camp counselor, debate champion, Yale honors graduate and most of all a writer. At the mere age of 22 she had accomplished more than most people had ever dreamed of. She was set to start working as an assistant to The New Yorker Magazine in June, a job any writer would dream of. A musical she wrote called "Independants" is to be performed at the New York International Film Festival this summer.

I've read stories about her now in the Boston Globe, The NY Times, NPR, Huffington Post. This kid (because really at 22 you are a kid) made an impact. Yet from all the articles and stories that I read, it was a piece that she wrote for a special edition of Yale's commencement exercises just a few weeks ago that has hit me the hardest. Its tragically beautiful knowing the circumstances now.

I will publish the piece below so that as many people as possible can read Marina's world and can take some of the inspiration with them. My heart hurts for my friends families at this moment and would like to just remind everyone that life is short and tomorrow is not guaranteed. Live like Rob and Marina and live life for today.

xoxo

"The Opposite of Loneliness" by Marina Keegan.

We don’t have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I could say that’s what I want in life. What I’m grateful and thankful to have found at Yale, and what I’m scared of losing when we wake up tomorrow and leave this place.
It’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together. Who are on your team. When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s four a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt. The hats.
Yale is full of tiny circles we pull around ourselves. A cappella groups, sports teams, houses, societies, clubs. These tiny groups that make us feel loved and safe and part of something even on our loneliest nights when we stumble home to our computers — partner-less, tired, awake. We won’t have those next year. We won’t live on the same block as all our friends. We won’t have a bunch of group-texts.
This scares me. More than finding the right job or city or spouse – I’m scared of losing this web we’re in. This elusive, indefinable, opposite of loneliness. This feeling I feel right now.
But let us get one thing straight: the best years of our lives are not behind us. They’re part of us and they are set for repetition as we grow up and move to New York and away from New York and wish we did or didn’t live in New York. I plan on having parties when I’m 30. I plan on having fun when I’m old. Any notion of THE BEST years comes from clichéd “should haves...” “if I’d...” “wish I’d...”
Of course, there are things we wished we did: our readings, that boy across the hall. We’re our own hardest critics and it’s easy to let ourselves down. Sleeping too late. Procrastinating. Cutting corners. More than once I’ve looked back on my High School self and thought: how did I do that? How did I work so hard? Our private insecurities follow us and will always follow us.
But the thing is, we’re all like that. Nobody wakes up when they want to. Nobody did all of their reading (except maybe the crazy people who win the prizes…) We have these impossibly high standards and we’ll probably never live up to our perfect fantasies of our future selves. But I feel like that’s okay.
We’re so young. We’re so young. We’re twenty-two years old. We have so much time. There’s this sentiment I sometimes sense, creeping in our collective conscious as we lay alone after a party, or pack up our books when we give in and go out – that it is somehow too late. That others are somehow ahead. More accomplished, more specialized. More on the path to somehow saving the world, somehow creating or inventing or improving. That it’s too late now to BEGIN a beginning and we must settle for continuance, for commencement.
When we came to Yale, there was this sense of possibility. This immense and indefinable potential energy – and it’s easy to feel like that’s slipped away. We never had to choose and suddenly we’ve had to. Some of us have focused ourselves. Some of us know exactly what we want and are on the path to get it; already going to med school, working at the perfect NGO, doing research. To you I say both congratulations and you suck.
For most of us, however, we’re somewhat lost in this sea of liberal arts. Not quite sure what road we’re on and whether we should have taken it. If only I had majored in biology…if only I’d gotten involved in journalism as a freshman…if only I’d thought to apply for this or for that…
What we have to remember is that we can still do anything. We can change our minds. We can start over. Get a post-bac or try writing for the first time. The notion that it’s too late to do anything is comical. It’s hilarious. We’re graduating college. We’re so young. We can’t, we MUST not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it’s all we have.
In the heart of a winter Friday night my freshman year, I was dazed and confused when I got a call from my friends to meet them at EST EST EST. Dazedly and confusedly, I began trudging to SSS, probably the point on campus farthest away. Remarkably, it wasn’t until I arrived at the door that I questioned how and why exactly my friends were partying in Yale’s administrative building. Of course, they weren’t. But it was cold and my ID somehow worked so I went inside SSS to pull out my phone. It was quiet, the old wood creaking and the snow barely visible outside the stained glass. And I sat down. And I looked up. At this giant room I was in. At this place where thousands of people had sat before me. And alone, at night, in the middle of a New Haven storm, I felt so remarkably, unbelievably safe.
We don’t have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I’d say that’s how I feel at Yale. How I feel right now. Here. With all of you. In love, impressed, humbled, scared. And we don’t have to lose that.
We’re in this together, 2012. Let’s make something happen to this world.

Esperanza Spalding is Back!

I love this lady. I've wrote about her numerous times before but like most you probably still have forgotten her name. Let me remind you who this lady is. She beat out Justin Beiber for Best New Artist at the Grammy's last year. She has played numerous concerts with some of the biggest names in the jazz business. She has played at the White House on numerous occasions. Yes even at her young age, she is that good.

Here is a video treat for you, from when she recently stopped by the NPR offices. Her and her band play an amazing rendition of "Smile Like That".

Harper Blynn "Halo"

A few weeks ago I talked about a band that I had recently discovered and absolutely fell in love with. Their names were Harper Blynn and they have been on heavy rotation in my music world ever since. Do you forget about this post? Its okay you can revisit it HERE.

Last night on a late night youtube search I found their amazing cover of Beyonce's song "Halo". Yes I know what you are thinking but give it a chance, they did an amazing job.

Love these guys!

Who Loves Tim Burton?

I love Tim Burton. Love Love Love.

I will continue to say that his exhibit I saw a few years ago at the NYC MOMA was one of the most amazing artistic exhibits I've ever seen in my life. It was just so amazing to get a sneak peek inside this mad mans head.

Well this morning someone had the great idea for pulling together a tribute to him and they did a fantastic job. If you are a fan of his work like myself you will love this next video.

What is your favorite Tim Burton film?

Mine is easy. Nightmare Before Christmas followed closely by Edward Scissorhands.

Dear GOP Senate. You Suck!

I know that this is not a political blog and most of you could care less about how I feel about politics in general but this has got me a little bothered and I need to vent.

The amazing GOP Senate blocked legislation yesterday for a bill that would help pave the way for people like me to demand equal pay for equal work. The bill failed by 6 votes in the Senate.

"For millions of American women, no amount of talent or dedication will bring pay equality with male coworkers" Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor yesterday. "In the minds of many employers, they simply aren't equal".

A similar bill failed in 2010.

Even the President chimed in last night stating "incredibly disappointing that in this make-or-break moment for the middle class, Senate Republicans put partisan politics ahead of American women and their families".

As a hard working woman who hopefully will have a long career ahead of her this disappoints me to no end. I really hope that everyone is paying attention to everything before they make their choice for not only their President this November but their local offices as well.

It is 2012 people. WAKE UP.

Axl Get It Together!

I can't say that I am surprised at this recent turn of events but it is one of the more ridiculous things I've ever heard a lead singer do.

So this past week while performing at Londons famed O2 arena the Guns N' Roses lead singer banned anyone attending their two shows from wearing any Slash merchandise. No t-shirts with his face, logo, or anything to do with him. What would happen if you showed up to the show with a t-shirt on? Yup, you were asked to take it off.

Seriously!?!

This is according to british music magazine NME who has an interview with a fan that was forced to remove his shirt. His name was James and he is quoted saying "I believe they asked me to do this (take off my shirt) because Axl has some problem with Slash and if he saw me wearing the shirt he may have stormed off stage. I have never experienced anything as insulting as this at a concert before".

Stay classy Axl.

Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!!

Dear Lady Gaga please take notes. This is what a great performance should look like. Grace Jones at the age of 62 hit the stage this week for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and not only did she sound fabulous but she hula hooped during the entire performance. I can not even imagine how difficult that must have been.

The entire thing is made better by the fact that she thinks its the Queen's birthday.

I love Grace Jones so much! Enjoy this performance.

Miley Cyrus Engaged!?!?

Well this is news that will most likely make yous spit your coffee out this morning. Little Miley Cyrus is engaged. Yup. She is 19 and her boyfriend is 22.

I feel old. Really really old today.

Foo Fighters Drummer to Play Iggy Pop In 'CBGB'

While I was a little shocked at first, after thinking more and more about it this is a great casting job.

Taylor Hawkins will play Iggy Pop in the new film CBGB. This will be his first real significant acting role (although we all remember his comedy in the Foo Fighters videos). Its not clear yet how big the role might be but I think it has the potential to be great.

Worst comes to worst he looks just like him!

Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967.

I messed up. Yes that is right, I am admitting my wrongs and correcting them here. Last week I reviewed the new John Mayer album after a one take listen. Well, after taking some more listens to the album, I still agree that its a great album but I have a correction to my post. I completely missed the best song on the album. Doh.

So here is my correction:

"Walk Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967" could be the best song that John Mayer has ever written. Its the one I can most easily relate to that is for sure. Because you see its a song that hits on the themes of being unsatisfied and hoping for more; dreaming of more. Then pushing off to sea hoping for more. Its the story of Walt Grace and his attempt to make a 'One Man Fan Blade Submarine Ride"

Lyrics:

Walt Grace, desperately hating his whole place,
Dreamed to discover a new space,
And buried himself alive,
Inside his basement, tongue on the side of his face when,
He's working away on displacement,
And what it would take to survive.

'Cause when you're done with this world,
You know the next is up to you.

And his wife told his kids he was crazy,
And his friends said he'd fail if he tried,
But with a will to work hard,
And a library card,
He took a homemade, fan-blade, one-man submarine ride.

That morning, the sea was mad and I mean it,
Waves as big as he'd seen it,
Deep in his dreams at home.
From dry land,
He rolled it over to wet sand,
Closed the hatch up with one hand,
And peddled off alone.

'Cause when you're done with this world,
You know the next is up to you.
And for once in his life it was quiet,
As he learned how to turn in the tide,
And the sky was a flare,
When he came up for air,
In his homemade, fan-blade, one-man submarine ride.

One evening,
When weeks had passed since his leaving,
The call she'd planned on receiving,
Finally made it home.
She accepted,
The news she'd never expected,
The operator connected,
A call from Tokyo.

'Cause when you're done with this world,
You know the next is up to you.
Now his friends,
Bring him up when they're drinking,
At the bar with his name on the side,
And they smile when they can,
As they speak of a man,
Who took a homemade,
Fan-blade, one-man submarine ride.

Now comes the big question that I have been battling with for the last week. Did Walt survive his trip? I think its a great question that John left unanswered. In my opinion he made it and here is why. And this is exactly why I love lyrics so much!!

"And his wife told his kids he was crazy" - his wife did not believe he would succeed
"She accepted the news she never expected" - this confirms that he survived against all expectations
"Now his friends bring him up when they're drinking" - they reminisce because he had the courage to change his life, to move on. He did not die.

I see it as a positive, motiviational story. If you are afraid of change you will take the side of his wife and his friends, if you are looking for change and adventure knowing it will bring struggle and adversity, you will take Walt's.

"Cause when your done with this world
You know the rest is up to you"

Ladies and Gentlemen, I stand corrected. This is John Mayer at his finest.

Greatest Picture Ever Taken

It is safe to say that this is the greatest picture ever taken.

This was the Queen last night at her Royal Jubilee.

Amazing.

Happy Tuesday Morning.

Guess What Starts This Week???

Phish Tour! Phish Tour! Phish Tour! Phish Tour! Phish Tour!

Paul Revere by The Roots

The legendary Roots crew threw down on one of my favorite Beastie Boys songs over the weekend at their show at UCLA. I wish the video quality was a little better but I'll still take it!

Truth.

This just made me laugh.... because its true.

New Coldplay ft. Rihanna

Here is the new video for "Princess of China" from Coldplay featuring Rihanna. I am not the biggest fan of the song but the video is pretty neat and features a samurai battle. And its music news so here it is.

Mraz and Perri. Together At Last

Man I've been waiting for this combo to happen for years! Finally it has. Thank you Jason Mraz and Christina Perri for collaborating on "Distance" from Christinas album. I've always loved the song and now I get a video.

It's a great simple video that shows the two of them in the creative process in the studio. Love it!

Update: I can't figure out how to actually post the video. Fail. Please follow the link below to watch.

Welcome to New Music Video Monday!

Hello and welcome back to yet another exciting week. Hopefully everyone has had a good start to their morning and that they had an equally enjoyable weekend. I myself had a really good one. Enjoyed some good company, some great bbq food, some Flying Squirrels baseball. All and all a great weekend here in Richmond. This week will be a short one as I am headed to NJ for the weekend on Friday.

Today I will be bringing you a series of new videos from a few different artists. It seems as if I have been off my music video game for a while and a few have caught my eye.

I will start with "Man on Fire" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. You may remember them from their catchy tune "Home". Yup that one. They are back. Enjoy their new video.
