Not Music Related

This could be the cutest video I have ever seen in my life. This kid is a good liar.
hahahaha.

Clarkson Photo-bombed Ellen

Easily the picture of the night last night:

Kendra Morris "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"

It was hard not to notice the following Pink Floyd cover when we went to go see "Zero Dark Thirty" last month. It was featured in a trailer for a movie for some Colin Farrel action movie but what grabbed everyone s attention was not the film it was the absolutely stunning cover that Kendra Morris does. Bravo girl. Bravo.

Celeste and Jesse Forever Soundtrack

Watched a super fantastic movie yesterday staring Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg called "Celeste and Jesse Forever". It was a typical indie movie complete with great acting and even better music. Here are a few of the songs from the soundtrack you may enjoy.

Lily Allen first with "Little Things". Just a simple song about a relationship that worked perfect in the movie.

Porcelain Raft with 'Drifting in and Out'

Bobby Caldwell with "Open Your Eyes"

And finally can't sum up this soundtrack without mentioning the amazing Freddie Scott with "You Got What I Need".

Faith Hill Wears Braces?

Didn't see this one coming...

Smash..Smash..Smaash Auto-Tuned

Well I think that I warned you that it was just a matter of time before the hitchhiker turned hero video was auto-tuned. Its pretty fabulous.

Okay I'm out for the next hour or two. Maybe I'll have some more time this afternoon to get on here. Maybe not. Guess you will have to stay tuned to find out.

Sophia Grace & Rosie at Grammys

I can't wait to see this segment on Ellen's show soon. Ellen Degeneres sent her girls Sophia Grace & Rosie to cover the Grammy Red Carpet last night. While I have yet to find video of my favorites I did find this cute photo of them talking to Katy Perry.

Lil Wayne Booted from Basketball Game

Lil Wayne had a little bit of trouble yesterday in Miami where he was thrown out of the Miami-LA game. Now versions of what actually happen vary here are the two sides:

-Lil Wayne says that it was due to him being a Lakers fan.

-The other side is he got into an altercation with another fan and made a gun gesture while doing so.

Either way I'm sure we will hear more about this story soon. You should have just gone to the Grammys Weezy.

SNL Update

I will have to say my assumptions were correct when predicting that Justin Bieber would bomb during his weekend SNL appearance. I tried to give the kid a chance but he just didn't cut it. He tried too much to be like Justin Timberlake and literally saved himself by singing through every single skit.

Also I couldn't take him seriously after his ridiculous performances. During one he wore a mesh tank top and the other he performed with a hanging microphone. It was just too much. Sorry kid.

Proof

Hello and Happy Monday.

Hopefully by this time you have made it through my Grammy Recap from last night... man was that exhausting. But I stick by my story that it was a good show and moved along nicely.

There is just one more thing Grammy related I wanted to post about. I wanted to show you proof that Prince was there with said cane. It was amazing and ridiculous all rolled into one.

Grammy Awards 2013

Hello! I'm bringing you a special post this Sunday night. A live recap of the Grammy Awards!! I know I know you all are probably sick of me and award shows but thats who I am. I am an award show junkie. Blame my mother and her Ms. America pageant parties when I was a kid. Now a small warning before I start. I know that my grammar and spelling isn't always the best but I can guarantee that tonight will certainly be bad. I will be doing this on the fly so please bare with me. It may also be long...

So here we go 2013 Grammy Awards!!!

We should start with the red carpet. I will say that I find it hilarious that CBS and the Grammy's sent the attendees a fashion dress code asking for no side boob or extra skin. Its the Grammy's... I'm pretty sure that nobody is going to listen to that.

So far I have seen a man in a full space suit helmet and all, Rick Ross smoking a cigar the size of my arm, J. Lo's entire leg is out, Ryan Secrest hit Taylor Swift in the face with a microphone, Amber Rose looks like she should have given birth yesterday, someone forgot to tell Chris Brown that nobody cares about him or his attendance tonight, Nicole Kidman looks absolutely terrified on the carpet she is surely out of her element, Adele looks like she is having a blast...hard not to when you owned this award show last year, FUN are looking as hipster as ever and I audibly cheered when I saw Alabama Shakes hit the carpet.

I am looking forward tonight to the Lumineers performance, Justin Timberlakes comeback performance, Kelly Clarkson winning a bunch of awards, and Sting with a Bob Marley tribute. I will say with Mumford and Sons, The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes and Ed Sheeran there is a lot to be excited about tonight. Lets get this show started...

-Well it looks like they are getting Taylor Swifts performance out of the way first. She is singing that song that is everywhere you turn at the moment "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". She looks and sounds great (look at those legs... oh to be 20 again). I love you Taylor but I really hope I never ever ever hear that song ever again.

-Oh wow didn't realize that LL Cool J was hosting again this year. As Miley Cyrus says I guess thats "pretty cool". Oh no he just called Taylor T-Swizzle. This could be a long night. Move it along LL.

-Holy Shit. A crowd shot just showed Rihanna and Chris Brown sitting together. Remember he beat the shit out of her the night before this award show a few years ago. You have gotta be kidding me. You know how I feel about these two but come on CBS please do not show them again. Please.

-These awards are known for their strange duets. Up first is Ed Sherran and Elton John singing his hit "A Team". I'm a fan of Ed's and am glad he is getting a shot at the big stage tonight. Must be a cool moment to be a kid from England and have Elton singing one of your songs with you.

-Back from our first commercial break and we are finally presenting an award. Pit Bull and J. Lo are presenting Best Pop Solo Performance. Great joke by J. Lo "as you can see I read the memo" ha. Way to play by your own rules J. Lo. As for the award I think it should go to... Adele "Set Fire to the Rain" or Kelly Clarksons "Stronger". The winner is... Yup Adele has this one on lock. Good for her it was from her performance at Royal Albert Hall one of the best music dvd's i've ever seen.

-Hey Neil Patrick Harris. I love you! He is here to introduce one of my favorites from this year... FUN are performing! I know my boyfriend hates this band but I can't deny this kids voice. He can sing and their songs are catchy. This performance is also very impressive its literally pouring down on stage Also glad they are singing "Carry On" its my favorite from their entire album. "may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground...carry on"

-John Mayer wearing a ridiculous blue velvet suit and Bonnie Raitt looking as great as ever are here to introduce the country portion of the evening. I will be taking my break and catching up with the BAFTA (British Oscars also playing now on BBC) right now. Sorry country you don't have me until Drew Kennedy is on that stage.

-Next is a new artist that I have no idea who it is, they say his name is Miguel? He is performing with Wiz Khalifa. Nothing special about this performance at all except for the ridiculous pinstripe suits they are both wearing. They are staying on stage to present a country award which I find hilarious. The winner of "Best Solo Performance Country" is: Carrie Underwood. American Idol in the house! Carrie looks amazing as always... her dress is to die for!!

-We are back again for music's biggest night. Here is the award for "Song of the Year" should be a highly contested category but I'll be pulling for Kelly Clarkson on this one. Winner is: FUN with "We are Young". I can't be mad at this.

-Hey Johnny Depp is here to present Mumford and Sons. Please hold while I dance around my apartment for the next 3 minutes. I love these guys!! Also I love how Taylor Swift is without shame singing along... she looks like the only person there that is actually having fun. Lighten up people!

-Hey its Ellen Degeneres and Beyonce. I hate what Beyonce is wearing and well lets be honest Ellen looks no different then she does any day. OMG. It's time for Justin Timberlake's performance. I've waited for this for about six years. Wow not like I ever doubted it but Justin has not missed a beat. Not a huge fan of the "Suit and Tie" song but he looks, sounds and is dancing like he never took a break. He also just called out Jay-Z who came out of his seat to rap. Bonus. Okay he is now performing a new song and well I love it. Full orchestra. Jazzy. Funky. I love it. (I'm such a girl when it comes to JT... some things you can just not help). For the first time of the night the entire crowd is on its feet, the music world is glad that Justin is back, and obviously so am I.

-Kelly Rowland and Nas are on stage to present the award for a new category "Best Urban Contemporary Album". I swear to god if they give it to Chris Brown I quit. Winner is: thankfully Frank Ocean. I don't get this mans music but  a lot do so good for him.

-Dave Grohl is back and they just announced he has won 13 Grammys. Thats nuts. Hes out to talk about the engineers, producers and all those guys his new documentary "Sound City" talks about. He announced Producer of the Year went to Black Keys Dan Auerbach in the early ceremony. He is also giving the award for "Best Rock Performance". I'm pulling for the underdog Alabama Shakes but pretty sure Black Keys have this one. Winner: Yup "Lonely Boy" by The Black Keys win it. Their second album not as great as their first but it still rocks.

-Next performance is another duet by Alecia Keys and Maroon 5. I thought this performance was actually pretty fantastic especially when Alecia took to the drums. Bravo. Also it looks like the crowd has finally woken up.

-Award for "Best Pop Vocal Album" is next and well if Kelly Clarkson doesn't take this one down the Grammys failed her. She deserves it, she has easily the best pop voice in the game. Winner: Yay Kelly!! She looks genuinely shocked and has the best speech of the night so far. I'm happy.

-Here is a performance from Rihanna who I am going to avoid due to her choice in dates tonight. Do yourself a favor girl go home and call a therapist. I'm pretty sure you need one.

-We now have the award for the "Best Rap Song/Collaboration" Carly Rae Jepson is presenting. Yes the "Call Me Maybe" girl. Ugh. The winner is: "No Church in the Wild" by Jay-Z and Kanye West. Thankfully Kanye is not here to accept but Jay-Z is.

-My girl Kat Dennings is on stage to introduce The Black Keys. They sound fantastic!! Have a full New Orleans jazz band backing them, an amazing choice. They literally just blew the stage apart. Maybe my favorite performance so far.

-Kelly Clarkson is given the honor to sing the praises of two of the evenings "Lifetime Achievement Award" winners Patty Page and Carole King. Well she just proved why she just won an award, this girls voice is easily one of the best in the business. She is effortlessly powerful and pure. I could watch her sing songs all day long.

(Small break to remind you that I did warn you that this post could get a little long... hopefully if you have made it to this point you are finding it oddly entertaining. We have about an hour left... we can do this people!)

-Next is "Best Country Album" and well I couldn't tell you one thing about the nominees. Sorry. Zach Brown Band won. Congrats I guess...

-Here it goes. A Bob Marley Tribute with Sting, Rihanna and Bruno Mars. First is Bruno... and well he always kills it live, not a huge fan but again he is a good performer. Here comes one of my favorites ever Sting!!! And again another shot of Taylor Swift dancing like she is having the time of her life in the crowd makes me just love her that much more. They jam for a while before Rihanna comes out with Ziggy Marley. And the place just turned into a reggae jam fest. I may or may not be dancing in between sentences. Definitely singing "Could You Be Loved" one of my favorite Marley tunes ever. I love me some Bob Marley and it looks like everyone there does too because the crowd is loving it. I loved the performance but to be honest I expected a little bit more.

-Really happy to see our next performers take the stage. I love The Lumineers, they are a true indie music success story. I love their sound, the vibe of the band members and their style. This is my type of band.

-They finish their performance and introduce someone I had no idea was performing but I am STOKED. It's Jack White. He gives an amazing performance and I remember why this man is one of the rarities in rock music these days. I wonder if he is touring anywhere near here soon, I would love to see him live.

-Okay here we go with "Best New Artist". Please not the "Call Me Maybe" girl. Anyone but her. ANYONE BUT HER. Here we go, Katy Perry is there to present the award and the winner is: Fun. While I was really hoping for the Alabama Shakes to win this I again can not be mad at their decision, Fun. had quite the year.

-I have no idea who Hunter Hayes is or why is is singing on my television right now. Oh I guess he is singing the introduction to Carrie Underwood. Wow Carrie looks and sounds flawless. Again one of those effortless talents. I guess American Idol can really get it right sometimes. Great performance.

-Here is a big award "Record of the Year". Wow Prince is giving this award out and he comes out like a boss full cane and all. haha So ridiculous I love it. The Winner is: Wow Gotye wins. Just when I got "Somebody That I Used To Know" out of my head its instantly back in. Damn you Gotye.

-For some reason they are brining Justin Timberlake back on stage and I approve.

-Oh man its the sad part in the show. The "In Memory" portion and I will just mention some big ones: Donna Summer, Andy Williams, Robin Gibb, Davy Jones, Dick Clark, Andy Griffith, ADAM YAUCH, AND LEVON HELM.

-I have been waiting for this Levon Helm tribute performance all night. Elton John starts off on piano singing "The Weight" with an all star cast including Brittney Howard from the Alabama Shakes and Mavis Staples surrounding him. They sound so great. I'm going to pause and just enjoy this for a moment. Wow. Just wow. That was easily the performance of the night (I watched it twice). Everyone sounded great and they certainly picked the right man to pay tribute to... we miss you Levon!

-I guess the man who won the Latin Album of the Year (I missed his name) is on stage singing Elton John's "Your Song". Not sure why... he sounds great just a little out of place. He finishes and introduces Frank Ocean. Like I stated before much respect to this man that a lot of people seem to be enjoying... Its just not my cup of tea.

Only a little bit more left... we are almost there. If you are still with me you deserve an award yourself. Contact me for where to pick that up.

-Adele is back on stage to present the biggest award of the night for "Album of the Year". As you know she won this last year and this years competition is fierce! I do believe the winner should be either Mumford & Sons or Jack White. The winner actually is: Yes. Mumford takes this one home. I forgot for a moment that the lead singer is married to actress Carrie Mulligan. Moving on. These boys look genuinely humbled. I think their album that the put out last year was one of the best and they deserved this one.

-Alright we made it to the end, only one last performance left. LL Cool J takes the stage to actually perform this time with his friends Chuck D, Tom Morello and Travis Barker. Right on. This is a great way to end the show! PS Tom Morello is a beast.

Well we made it to the end of yet another Grammy Awards. I have to admit this show was actually the best one I have watched in years. The performances as a whole were really good, the awards went to people who deserved them and the show flowed pretty well. Bravo to all involved.

Thats a wrap for me. Time to go to sleep...

No Time. Never Any Time.

Hello and let me start off by saying I'm sorry. I have been absolutely slammed at work this week and have not had enough time to get on here and discuss the music issues going on in the world. I apologize. I promise that I will try and get on here this afternoon and post but no promises.

Also trying to do research to figure out if it is a smart idea to drive myself into a snowstorm in NJ-NY this weekend. It would be one thing if I was just going to NJ, but I'm kind of worried about needing to drive into Brooklyn on Saturday morning. Decisions decisions.

For now I will leave you with a couple of news bulletins.

-For anyone who cares, the band Fall Out Boy is making a comeback

- Guns N' Roses has been added to the line up at the Governors Ball

-Elton John has performed with Queens of the Stoneage for their new album. Odd pairing.

-The Grammy Awards are on this Sunday and it seems as if everyone in the entire music industry is performing

-I downloaded a new app on my phone called "Songza" and it has changed my life

-In the worst move of the century, Rihanna accompanied Chris Brown to court yesterday. He was there to answer questions about the probation he was put on for beating the shit out of her. Now that Rihanna is some good decision making, doesn't make you look dumb at all.

I'll be back with more later.

Josh Ritter In Richmond!

So excited that one of my favorite acts is coming to Richmond in May! Been waiting to see Josh Ritter for a long time and finally I will be able to do it. May 22nd my schedule has been cleared!

Can't wait to hear gems like this one off his new album due out in March its called "In Your Arms Again".

Hyundai Team

Last thing about the Super Bowl. The commercials were terrible! There are really only about three that I even remember. My favorite was easily the Hyundai Team. Who doesn't want to see a little kid wrestle a bear?

To the rest of you companies that spent $6 million or so on a spot.... step your game up!

Alicia Kills It

Well after you are done watching Beyonce below you can come up here and enjoy one of the better National Anthems I've heard in a while. Alicia Keys took to her piano and absolutely killed the song. I can't even imagine the amount of pressure she had on her while singing this...

Beyonce Super Bowl 2013

Unless you were living under a rock you most likely were watching the Super Bowl on Sunday where Beyonce performed during halftime. While it wasn't the most stellar thing I have ever seen in my life I really didn't think it was too bad at all. Yes the set list could have been better but hey she did her best. I did appreciate the whole Destiny's Child reunion that they had on there. Yes I was dancing right along with them.

Overall I give it a solid B. Solid.

In Defense of Jam Bands

Now I'm sorry I went on that rant but to clear your head read this intelligent article written by Katie Bain who blogs for L.A. Weekly. Link right HERE.

My favorite quote is: "but isn't there a certain bravery to doing the things that make you feel good regardless of-- make that, especially if -- people think you look like an idiot while doing it?... you can bet Phish heads, Deadheads, and Panic people cavorting in parking lots and grassy fields do not care what you think. And that's heroic. And sometimes revelatory..."

I have to remember not to let this crap bother me.

This Is What I Have To Deal With

Being a Phish fan is hard work. As much as you don't feel like you have to defend your favorite band every two or three days, it seems like everyone out there loves to hate a lot more than they love to leave us alone.

For example Ben Shapiro who writes for noisey.com wrote a great piece of trash this morning labeled: "Phish has been a band for 30 years now and they have sucked the entire time" (and no I will not provide a link to it because he just wants attention and I don't want to give him the clicks). Usually I will just let these stupid comments and articles go by without bothering me its when I read things like:

PHISH FANS ARE PIECES OF HUMAN GARBAGE
"The caliber of Phish's fan base is a classic, time-honored reason to hate the band as much as the Khmer Rouge. Phish fans are basically dead-eyed jocks that are too drugged-up to rape. They're often referred to as "Wookies," a reference to the slack-jawed, non-verbal state they perennially exist in following consumption of olympic amounts of lysergic acid diethylamide. Most of these people are harmless enough, if you consider the vegetarian, cross-dressing sons of chemical biologists with names like "Murph-nugget" harmless."
Yes because I don't know if you know me or my friends... but that surely sounds like us.
Seriously? I can not believe someone gave you a job? You sound like a bitter tween.
Why take time out of your day to judge me and my friends for liking a band that makes us happy? How many of you find yourself defending the things you love on an almost daily basis or deal with instant snap judgments as soon as the words come out of your mouth.
As much as I try to ignore it I can't. I am sick and tired of defending what makes me happy.

Not Sure Why This Is News... But It Is

Its an extremely slow Friday today so I'm really reaching for news....like this right here.

Lil Wayne cut his dreads off. See picture above.

That is all for this special report.

Kitten Album Covers

I usually do not like cats... but when they are used for this purpose I am a big fan of them!

Whoa.

Not a huge Disco Biscuits fan but loving their use of lasers on their latest tour.

I've only seen lasers used once at a show and it literally blew my mind.

Oh Thank Heaven

Over two years ago in January 2011 I wrote this blog. Click Here.

I was clearly not happy that Willow Smith had been picked to portray "Little Orphan Annie" in the new movie remake. Not happy at all.

Well I'm pleased to report that today it has been announced that her name has been dropped from the project. They don't know who will replace her yet but really anyone would be better.

Sorry Willow. I'm sure there is a place for you in this industry somewhere just not as Annie.

Crisis averted.

Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys

A friend of mine just posted about this song and it jogged my memory on how great it really is. I haven't listened to it in ages but its worth it today. Take a listen to it right now! Do it! Dooo ittt!

"You're on the floor
Fearful of what's outside your door
But the codes and keys
They can protect you from the pangs of jealousy

And when you scream, love you see
Like a child throwing stones at the sky"

Crazy Video From 1987

Now this is the reason why I continue to read RollingStone.com because they can dig up videos like this! Just for a moment take yourself back and imagine this scene:

"U2 was nearly done with their set at Philadelphia's JFK stadium on September 25th, 1987 when a roadie brought out another mic stand. "Anybody else want to play my guitar" Bono asked the crowd. "Would Bruce Springsteen like to play my guitar?" As Bono literally bowed down before Springsteen, the crowd went insane. "I guess you guys know him. Is he a local boy or something?". They proceeded to play "Stand By Me".

Great find!

Super Bowl Commercials

Its that time of year again. This Sunday marks the day where everyone decides to throw away their diets for a day, sit in front of the couch for 7 hours and watch the best commercials ever!

Okay not really. Lets be honest about Sunday. There will be a football game. The Jets again are no where in sight. Although I do not have to watch either the Patriots or the Giants win, I'm still a little bummed that for my 30th straight year as a fan the Jets have failed at the one thing that I ask them to do. :)

Anyways. Sunday is the big game. In recent years I've been a little disappointed at the commercials, the lack of creativity or excitement. But I will again look forward to them because well... why not?

Here are some of my favorite all time SB commercials. Which are your favorites?

Gotta start with the 1993 Jordan vs Bird one:

The 1999 Monster commercial where kids recite ridiculous lines, always good.
"I wanna be forced into early retirement"

Of course the 1980 Mean Joe Green Ad:

Bud..Weis...Errrrrr. Don't have to say much else.

The legendary 1984 Apple commercial:

In 2003 Reebok did easily my favorite ad "Terry Tate Office Linebacker"

Goodbye 30 Rock

Well the 30 Rock finale last night lived up to everything I could have imagined. I even got my "Night Cheese" reference  I was a happy camper. The last 3 minutes were perfect. Rural Juror tribute song? What a way to go out.

"Thank you America. That's our show. Not a lot of people watched it but the jokes on you...because we got paid anyways" Couldn't have said it better myself.

Take a look at goodbye right here:

Go Red Babies!

Aww a friend of mine who still works at the Heart Association just sent me this picture from a Bon Secours hospital here in Richmond, Va. Too cute.

Trixie Whitley: Forth Corner

A few weeks ago I wrote about this artist Trixie Whitley that I was introduced to by a radio show while driving back from West Virginia. Well today I'm pleased to announce that her debut album has dropped and it is taking the music industry by storm. Do yourself a favor and watch this video below while you read the reviews from the experts. Its going to be fun to watch this talent grow.

From AmericanSongwriter.com - Hal Horowitz:
"As sole songwriter, singer and co-producer, Whitely is astonishingly mature for her first album, but assistance from keyboardist Thomas Bartlett whose piano is featured on many of the soaring ballads that dominate the set brings depth and intensity. Perhaps not what the rhythmic Black Dub approach would have suggested, but one listen to her tough vocals over reverbed guitar that echoes her dad’s atmospheric work in “Hotel No Name” shows that Trixie Whitely is an early contender for best new artist of 2013."

From the New York Times - Jon Pareless
Last year Ms. Whitley released solo versions of four songs from the album on an EP, “Live at the Rockwood Music Hall.” But in the studio she and Mr. Bartlett have made them darker and eerier; strings, electronics and percussion add new shadows and implications. Her are as much philosophical as personal: “Condemned in the eye of a sleeping mind/Wearing out the window of time,” she sings in “Fourth Corner.” Yet even when she’s inscrutable, she’s passionate.

From Glide Magazine:
That elusive creativity is something she continues to search for and quickly capture when revealed.  Her honesty as a musician becomes vivid especially through live performance, and this recording bottles that image uniquely.  The variable orchestration and detailed lyrics found on Fourth Corner show Trixie Whitley’s ability to structure ideas in separate environments, all while maintaining descriptive imagery for her voice to project upon.

From the Interrobang:
"The debut album by Trixie Whitley excels on so many levels.  Songs like ‘Irene’ ‘Hotel No Name’ and ‘Gradual Return’ echo her work with Black Dub and more effectively, her father, the late (and much missed) Chris Whitley.  When it comes to tales of heartache and longing, Whitley excels: ‘Pieces’, ‘Breathe You In My Dreams’ and ‘Need Your Love’ are devastating.  Expertly produced by Thomas Bartlett, Fourth Corner is at times, brooding, moody, dark but ultimately and wonderfully human.  Those who are waiting for rock’s new great voice are late.  It’s already here."

And finally here is what Trixie has to say about the album:
"I went through so much industry bullshit these last three years. So I'm doing this album independently. It may not sell shit, because it's not in a certain category. I just want this to be a memorable experience. Something [my fans] will remember for years to come. If I can do that, I'll really be happy."

Go Red For Women

Yep you guessed it. Today is Go Red For Women Day. I even dug out my old Heart Association Red Dress pin to celebrate. I will not bore you with all the facts out there that heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in this country. Or that its more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. Or that it kills approx. one woman every minute and that since 1984 more women than men have died each year from heart disease. The problem is that only 1 in 5 American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat and that is a big problem.

I hope you are supporting all the women in your life by supporting this great cause.

That and happy Friday! :)

Here is my favorite "Go Red" commercial from my girl Elizabeth Banks:
