Shepard Fairey/Rolling Stones Collaborate

This week the Rolling Stones celebrated 50 years in the music industry! Talk about impressive..... To celebrate this occasion they asked famed street artists Shepard Fairey to help re-do their classic logo.

Here is what he came up with.

And here is what he had to say about getting this opportunity:

"I've been a big fan of the Rolling Stones since my dad introduced me to "Satisfaction." Tattoo You is one of the earliest albums I bought with my own money and I studied the album package obsessively … you may notice how its color scheme and iconic art could have inspired me? The Rolling Stones have had a lot of great art over the decades, but nothing can top their tongue logo, originally created by John Pasche in 1971. In my opinion, the Stones' tongue logo is the most iconic, potent and enduring logo in rock & roll history. I think the logo not only captures Mick Jagger's signature lips and tongue, but also the essence of rebellion and sexuality that is the allure of all rock & roll at its finest.
I first worked with Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart on their project SuperHeavy. Mick and Dave were great to work with and I became at ease with our creative rapport despite their stature as musicians. However, when Mick Jagger reached out to me about designing a logo to mark the Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary I was quite overwhelmed. Mick said he was open to any of my ideas. One of the first things I asked Mick was, "Don't you think the tongue HAS to be included?" He responded, "Yeah, I guess it ought to be." Case closed. I was very humbled and honored to be asked to work on the 50th logo, so my objective was to service and showcase the Stones' legacy rather than try to make my contribution dominant.
I worked on this project as a fan knowing that the Stones' tongue was the focus and the starting point. With that in mind I set out to integrate the 50 in a creative and memorable way. I think the solution speaks for itself in celebrating the Stones' trademark icon and historical anniversary. I'd like to thank the Rolling Stones for all their great music that has impacted my life and for allowing me to make a small contribution to their 50th anniversary.
Cheers!"
Well done Mr. Fairey.

This Guys In Love With You

Here is another good one from the movie last night. Its an old tune, from Herb Alpert. Its a great song, and I swear they just don't make tunes like this anymore.

Take a moment out of your day for this classic.

The Air That I Breathe- The Hollies

I went and saw "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" last night. It actually was a pretty decent movie. The plot was pretty predictable but the acting was really good. Also the soundtrack was wonderful, really really wonderful. So wonderful I'll be highlighting a song or two on here today.

Hope everyone is having a good Friday. Sorry I was extremely busy over the last few days and didn't get a chance to get on here. Hopefully the three of you survived....

Here is a song by The Hollies called "The Air That I Breathe".

"Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you"

No Time!!

I have found myself surprisingly busy this week. I apologize for the extreme lack of blogging. I promise to get back to it as soon as I can.

ByeBye.

RIP Nora Ephron

One of the great writers of our time Nora Ephron passed away last night at the age of 71. She certainly will be missed.

Lyrics of the Day

"I struggled with destiny upon the ledge
And gasped when defeated he slipped off the edge
And silence contageious in moments like these
Consumed me and strengthened my will to appease
The passion that sparked me on terrible night
And shocked and persuaded my soul to ignite"
-Phish "Rift"

Adele Covers "The Cure"

One of my favorite Cure songs (shout out to my old babysitter RIP Adam Perez - Click Here). Here is the magical Adele putting her spin on "Lovesong"

What a beautiful cover.

Whoa. 50 Cent Injured In Accident

That has got to be scary. Rapper 50 cent was rear-ended by a huge truck on the Long Island Expressway last night. From the sounds of it he will be okay but he was taken to the hospital with neck and back injuries.

From what I'm reading the truck smashed into his bullet proof car and flipped it. (I guess after being shot at as many times as he has, bullet proofing your car is the way to go).

Here is to hoping for a speedy recovery.

Yay Jazz Festival

I'm pretty excited for the Jazz Festival here in Richmond in August.

Always one of my favorite weekends.

Phan Story of the Day

True story from the road:

"So Im driving through the south side of pittsburgh on saturday before the show, 3 blocks from my house and leaning against the window of a tanning salon, is Cactus himself. Needless to say I pulled over and had a quick chat with him, pretty cool stuff. We grabbed some grub and drove past him again like ten minutes later, so we slow down and say hi one more time. Here is where it gets good... Gordo tells us that his bus dropped him off at a vegetarian restaurant (zenith on 25th in the south side for any pittsburghers, pretty dank) and proceeded to get stuck on one of the crazy narrow roads in the south side slopes. We said (half kidding) ok well drive you down to the venue man and hes like um... that would be great. So we ended up driving him to Star Lake before the show. Mike Gordon. In my car. f***ing titties!

If this wasn't cool enough already, he even left his sunglasses in my backseat. Hugo Boss, pretty baller Mike

I shit you not...

AMAZING. I probably would have lost my marbles if Mike Gordon was in the backseat of my car.

Parkour

Last night while watching "American Ninja Warrior". Yes I watched. And yes, it actually was quite amazing. Some of those courses are no joke. I actually can't wait for them to make it to the big course in Vegas to see if anyone will actually be able to complete it. But the one thing I was noticing was there was a lot of 'parkour' athletes competing. If you are not familiar with this style of movement take a look at the video below. Its quite badass. But I must tell you do not attempt these stunts yourself.

Its actually quite beautiful.

Pop Music Mashup

Yeah this following video pretty much proves my point that pop music all sounds the exact same. And that they are all too catchy for their own good. Take a look at this mash up I found of just about every pop hit from the last year all in under four minutes.

Good Morning

Reason 356

On why I want to be Oprah....

And I'm Done.

.... and that my friends concludes my Phish day on the blog. I promise back to regular music tomorrow...

Truth.

Here is a recent review of a Phish show. May sound crazy, but to those of us involved... it couldn't be more true!

"This band and its fans exude joy. It's a big family of believers. They believe in the power of music to create love. They are here because traditional religion failed them. They found a new way to find God."

Everything Is Coming Up Katie!

(Long Phish Post Ahead.... Warning!)

This is a picture of me on Saturday night. As you can tell... I am about as happy as one person might be. As I sit at work this morning and reflect back to what actually happened on Saturday night, this exactly look is coming back across my face.

You see people, I am pretty much an easy simple kid. I try and do good work, I try and keep good people around me, I try to be kind to my family and most of all I try my best to take advantage of my life as it comes because I know I won't be here forever. Sometimes I spread myself thin and put other peoples needs before me. This happens at work and with family and friends, and to be honest. I'm okay with that. I'm okay with being the helper at work, the good/responsible kid, and the person that many people can rely on. Its tiring yes... but every now and again I get mine and boy is it worth it.

Saturday I got mine. And I got it good!

I decided when Phish tour was announced that I would only be hitting up three shows this summer. The local shows down in Portsmouth and then one out near Pittsburgh at a venue that I had never been to before. Why this random show? A few reasons but the main reason was, it was a Saturday night, it as a rare venue and I had a gut feeling that something special was going to happen there.

The crew was set. The cars were packed. And we were on our way... I was joined on this trip by some of my favorite people. But most importantly was Beth and Michelle. Two of my best friends in the entire world. Beth and I have seen over 90% of our Phish shows together and about 3-4 years ago we started on a journey to see the band play one of our favorite tunes... "The Lizards". To non-phish fans out there I will not go all crazy explaining this song, or why they never play it, or why we would make signs, pray for it, and scream for it all day long. It was our "White Whale" or our "Holy Grail". It was a thing that had turned into almost a comedy routine for us.... before every show. "You think they will play Lizards?" We always laughed.

Show after show after show.... I still didn't get the Lizards that I was waiting my entire Phish career to see. On  the New Years run in NYC we were in the 8th row. We made a sign. Trey even looked at me holding it (I swear he did...) And still no Lizards.

(Look how much glitter Beth put on this sign!)

The funny thing was... we never ended our pilgrimage. In fact we just added more people to our journey. There is Jason and Bianca the friends we met years ago in NYC. They too were looking for their first Lizards and we joined forces. We only get to about 1 or 2 shows together a year, but when we do. All we talk about is "well... maybe tonight would be it".

Getting back to the story at hand. Jason and Bianca were not supposed to be there this weekend. Yet after seeing the set lists that were thrown down in Portsmouth earlier in the week, they knew that something special was going to happen this weekend. I got a text thursday night saying that they got tickets and will be there! Great news.

On to the show on Saturday.
Our crew got there easily. We got to the hotel, hung out with more friends who had traveled from around this great country to be there. We loaded the cooler full of beers and headed to the huge beautiful lot at the venue. After a few hours of beers, hula hooping, hanging out, listening to the tigers-pirates game, making bets about what songs they would play. It was finally time to go in. At this point I usually go grab myself a venue poster, but this one was a little to weird for my liking. So I went back to the beer line.

Finally I saw Jason and Bianca. After a quick hello and some pictures they told me an emotional story that will stick with me forever. Their seats were right behind the handicap section. They had gotten there early and saw a girl in a hospital bed surrounded by paramedics and friends. She had a smile on her face because at that time Trey (lead singer) was out there talking to her for at least 30 minutes. After Trey left they heard from one of her friends that she was very very sick and really they didn't know how much longer she would actually make it. Her final request was to come to this show, surrounded by her friends and her favorite band. This was her family and where she wanted to be. Wow. Just wow.

Its moments like these that I realize the type of family that I am a part of. I felt honored to be there. Honored that that would be her last wish. Extremely humbled. I left Jason and Bianca at their seats with a one last "man I hope we hear our song tonight..." We laughed. And moved on. Time to find my dance spot.

I found the rest of my friends located about half way back dead center in the pavilion seats. Somehow they secured a full row of seats and we had plenty of room for all of us to get down. As I look around at Beth and Michelle and all of my friends who had traveled so far to get here. As I remember the girl a section in front of me. As I reminisced about how great I have it at the moment. A feeling of complete joy came over me.

Then the show started. As they ripped through song after stellar song. The show was just flowing better than any show I have been to in recent memory. The set list was sharp. The lights were in tune. The weather was beautiful. And here I was dancing up a storm, six hours away from my normal life in Richmond, Virginia.

The first set was fantastic. But it didn't hold a candle to the second set. That second set was on FIRE. The grooves, the jams, the unexpected setlist. Everything was just coming up as gold and we were all there loving it! At one point Michelle came in the middle of Beth and I put her arms around us and hugged us. It was a beautiful moment with some beautiful friends. I will never forget it. We are all so stupidly happy when we are seeing this band I hope that it is a feeling that I never ever have to go without.

We got through the end of the show with no lizards but it was okay. It was the furthest from our mind. When they play shows like that, your mind goes into a special place where you hold no expectations. You care not about what they will play next, or what you are hoping to hear. You are just in the moment enjoying it with a family of 20,000 people. The show came to a close and we were are still smiling. We danced. We laughed. We had a fantastic time.

As the band came back from their encore, I could already hear my voice starting to slip. I was hoping for maybe a "Good Times/Bad Times" or something else that would blow the roof off the place. I did not get it. But what I did get was far more exciting.

The opening licks of the guitar started and all of a sudden Beth and I found ourselves looking at each other in pure amazement. Could it be? Are they really playing this as an encore? After show after show after show.... are we finally getting our Lizards?

Yes. Yes we are. Beth ran down the line of seats to me and we hugged harder than I have hugged my friend in a long time. Both of us looked at each other and could not believe that we had finally captured that elusive "White Whale". As the band went into the song another feeling came over my body. A feeling of validation. A notion that I know many many people will never ever understand. All these years on tour, all these shows, all these songs, all the people I had met along the way the places I've seen, were all now validated with the playing of the song that got me hooked on Phish in the first place.

As the song played Beth Michelle and I swayed to the music. I screamed for Bianca and Jason knowing that they were losing their minds as well. As the final guitar solo sounded I found myself crying. I wasn't sad. I was too incredibly happy. All those long days at work. All those stressful things I've been going through over the last month or two. Everything just faded into the distance and all I could help thinking was. This is my life. How the hell did I get it so good? I have a great job. The best friends a girl could ask for. A supportive family. A amazingly wonderful understanding boyfriend. And a band that makes me so incredibly happy that it makes me cry. I feel like I have hit the jackpot on life.

Now I sit here at work on Monday. Reminiscing about it all.

The smile that hit my face Saturday night has yet to be removed.

Thank you to everyone in my life that helps me have moments like these. I can not tell you how much the experience I had on Saturday night meant to me. It is the reason why I pack my things up a few times a year and hit the road to see this band. There is that feeling that can not be captured, it can not be bottled up, it just needs to be experienced.

and like the song says... "The trick was to surrender to the flow..." And well I can finally say that I have.

Shopping List

This is amazing.... and I want it.

Phish Chicago: 1994. Epic.

Carry on...

(and yes it will probably be a phish day today)

The Lizards Are Free!!!

There is a big blog post coming people.... big one!

Saturday nights show was it for me. I had my moment. I got my lizards and well I feel completely and utterly validated about how I spend my time and money.

For a moment in time.... everything... and I mean everything.... was right in the world.

Stay tuned for a great story.

Waiting For The Time....

...when I can finally say... this has all been wonderful but now I'm on my way!

Off to Pittsburgh for the weekend for one last Phish concert of the summer (I think...)

If you need help picturing what I will be doing, see below!

Back on Sunday...

Avett Brothers on Conan

My favorite things are colliding yet again. Last night the Avett Brothers stopped by Conan's late night show to perform one of my favorite songs off of their album that dropped back in 2008. Love it!

Interesting Documentary

I would actually be curious to see the above documentary about celebrity culture and the price that some celebrities pay with these paparazzi. Now while I don't think you have the right to complain when you are making $30 million dollars for one movie. At the same time the invasion of privacy can't be anything that any normal human being can get used to. That and I can never imagine not being able to go to the store ever...

Again it looks interesting and I would be game to watch it.

No Big Deal.... But

In a day where all that I can think about is the party that will be raging in Burrgestown on Saturday night one of the photos I took on Wednesday night was posted by the band as one of the 'fan photos of the night'.

To many it may not be a cool thing, but to me its AWESOME. I love these boys so much!

Matt Keeps Dancing!

How can you not love a man who dances his way around the world? Take a look at the third and newest video that Matt put out. Its quite amazing. From what I hear the outtakes are coming out in a few days and my older brother and his wife will be in that one. I guess he filmed in NYC right next to them one day. Again proving that my older brother in fact has the midas touch.

This video will certainly make your day.

So True.

Guest DJ: Patti Smith

Ever wonder what influences the great and powerful Patti Smith. Well wonder no longer, follow the link below to an amazing interview she did with NPR. She guests DJ's on 'All Songs Considered' and she talks about her influences, what makes her tick, and old stories from back on the road. My favorite is the one she tells about meeting a young Jimi Hendrix while she was still a journalist. These are musical moments that I would die for.

Enjoy!!

Things I Missed

Things I missed while I was off enjoying the antics of the above band....

-Katy Perry is set to start her own record label. After the killing she probably gave her old label with this last record I wonder what took her so long... good move girl.

-Lily Allen is getting back into the studio to record a new album. Hopefully she stays focused and puts out the quality music she is known for.

-There was some ridiculous Justin Beiber documentary that aired on NBC last night. I guess it crashed peoples tvs. I don't get it.

-Tom Cruise's Rock of Ages.... bombed! Terribly. Can't say I didn't call it.

-Two bands I thought were done for good are back. Offspring and Everclear. Lets see how they do.

-Jim Carrey dropped from the Dumb and Dumber sequel officially breaking my heart.

Thats enough for now. Carry on.

I Went. I Saw. I Conquered.

The blog is a bit of a mess this week and for that I am sorry. That is what happens when I leave my life behind and head out on the road with my favorite band. Things like blogs tend to take a back seat. Yet I am back for the next 48 hours or so and well I can't even touch what happened the last two nights. They were amazing.

For now just some random pictures taken with my phone (haven't processed my actually camera pics yet).

Just another day or so and its off to Pittsburgh for some more.

I love this time of year....

and a musical highlight from last night!

Something You Didn't Expect

Well well well... what do we have here. I never in my life thought that I would mutter the following sentence.

Here is Alice Cooper covering Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way'.

No this is not a joke. I also love the guy in the crowd wearing the full penguin suit. ha.

Happy Birthday Paul!

Happy Birthday Sir Paul McCartney!

I'm sorry that I did not have enough time to give you a tribute that you deserved but this will have to do.

Here is one of my favorite solo efforts from the man.

No Time!!

With everything I need to get done this week it may be nightly posts for me. Just too busy! Please stand by.

Couch Tour - Atlantic City

I'm bringing you a rare Sunday update. This weekend was great. Had a lot of time to relax, hung out with some great people and got my head in gear for the next week.

Tonight I'm even happier because I will be doing the second best thing I could do without actually being at the Atlantic City Phish show. Couch Tour!!!

Hopefully the live streams are good and I can really get excited for the shows next week.

Its actually quite funny how a little bit of Phish can turn my entire month around. Remember that bad week I had last week... yup its gone. Like Jay-Z says "On to the next one...."

One More Thing Before I Go....

This is actually the world we are living in now...

Friday

It's officially Friday. I honestly didn't know if I would make it to today with the week that I just had. I'm just thankful that it is here and that after I get done with work today I do not have to be back here for two whole days.

That fact alone has put me in a good enough mood to finish the day off strong.

Hope everyone has a nice Fathers Day Weekend.

Hard To Believe....

This moment happened 18 years ago today. Still one of my favorite memories of all time...

Side Note

Can not believe I'm missing Phish in Atlantic City this weekend. Especially what happened last time they played there.... damnit! Anyone want to jump in the car?

Blair Hits It Big.... Again!

I've talked about my friend Blaire Reinhard and her band before on this blog. She is an old friend from the small town I grew up with in New Jersey, but with Blaire nothing is small. She has had her fair share of success in the music industry over the years, yet its her time with her family band "The Blaire Reinhard Band" which makes me respect her the most. That band is THE BAND to see around Morristown and where ever they play, a packed house is sure to follow.

I was pleasantly surprised last night when I was watching "So You Think You Can Dance" last night and one of the performers used one of the covers she did of "I Can't Make You Love Me" for their solo. Blaires brother is on the piano and her voice soars.

Way to go Blaire!!

Drake Beat Up Chris Brown

What goes around comes around. That is what people say, and that is what happened last night at a NYC Club where both Drake and Chris Brown were partying. Allegedly what had happened was..... Drake famously dated Rihanna right after she broke up with Chris Brown after he beat the living shit out of her. Fast foward to last night. Both the artists find themselves partying with their entourages at a club. From what I hear, Chris Brown sent a bottle over to Drake's table, which Drake did not appreciate too much (remember they hate each other). Drake approached the table and ended up popping Chris Brown in the face a few times before security tried to break them up. From there all hell broke loose and bottles were flying, tables were flipped and a scene was made.

I only report this to you because I find it hilarious that Chris got knocked in the face. He even took to twitter to post a picture of what happened.

HAHA. Karma buddy.

New Mumford & Sons

The more I hear from this album, the more I am excited for its release. If you have read this blog ever you know I am a huge fan of this next band. And this song called "Home" is a new release that is captivating my attention this morning.

"I ran away in floods of shame
I'll never tell how close I came
As I crossed the hollow road
Well you went left and I went right
As the moon hung proud and bright
You would have loved it here tonight"

Issac Brown aka MJ

Pretty sure there is some weird Benjamin Button thing going on here.... this little kid on America's Got Talent killed it with his rendition of Michael Jackson's "I Got You Back". He could be the cutest kid in America... Plus his personality is a hit!

(And no I don't actually watch this show but someone sent me this clip this morning and I have found it adorable!)

Ed Sheeran - New Music

I really like Ed Sheeran. I just got into his music a few months ago, and his debut album here in the US just dropped this week. So far everything I am hearing is original and pretty darn good. Below I'm going to post a couple of videos from a studio session he recorded just a few weeks ago.

If you like singer songwriters and originality give this man a chance. I promise it will not be the last that you will hear from him.

Aubrey Plaza. My New Favorite Interview.

Every so often I get a new favorite interview subject. In the past my two favorites have been Gabrielle Sidibe and Emma Stone. These girls can hold their own through just about any situation. Well I have a new one. Aubrey Plaza my girl from Parks and Recreation now has a new movie coming out called "Safety Not Guaranteed" and she has been making her rounds through media interviews.

What makes me love her so much? She is awesomely weird. She makes little to no sense. And is amazingly candid. And requests to eat candy through the entire interview. I love it so much. And if you really want to see some awkward comedy youtube her stand up routine. Hilarious.

At Chelsea Lately:

Bad News Wednesday

I'm sorry to start this day on such a sour note, but I'm starting to feel like this will be a big topic of conversation for me over the next few years. I have mentioned many many times before on this blog how I am 100% against the use of holograms to bring deceased artists back to the stage. First 2 Pac, then Freddie Mercury. I was kind of hoping that this trend would just fade into eternity...

It has not.

According to Billboard this morning, both Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix Estates are working on holograms of the artists to premiere at shows.

Jampol who handles the estates of not only Jim and Jimmi but Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Peter Tosh and Rick James suggested that this hologram would be part of a multimedia concert experience. The show could also include walls pixelated like giant TV screens, along with the use of lasers, lights, high quality audio and synchronized sound vibrations.

Ugh. Not happy about this...

Is It Time Yet?

Congrats to the LA Kings

Congrats to the LA Kings who brought home their first Stanley Cup in 44 years yesterday. You give us Jets fans hope that one day we will in fact have a championship of our own.

Things On My Mind

I've been way to busy over the last few hours to make a stop here and post anything real. So here are a bunch of random thoughts.

-I hate the layout of this blog right now. Its an eyesore and I really wish I remembered the coding to my old format. This one... not fun.
-I've worked a lot of hours over the last two days, and I still have at least seven hours ahead of me.
-This time next week I will be getting ready for Phish.
-Its 900 degrees in my office
-I'm really looking forward to the taco bar i'm having for dinner tonight.
-I think this video of Conan jumping a 10 Foot Bratwurst is hilarious.

Hope everyone is having a good day.... back to the grind.

Quote of the Day

My girl Fiona Apple is back with new music and is giving some great interviews as well. Today I read a great one over at NPR and I for one have been eagerly waiting for over seven years to hear from this great lady... and now we know why.

"The only reason it take me seven years to do stuff is because I just don't really have a plan. I got a lot of problems, but I'm really good at intuiting what I need to do to be happy with whatever I create. I know when to stop myself, I know when to start, I know when to start, I know when to leave something alone. I guess I just kind of indulge that completely, and so I just take my time."

And here is some new music!

Blog Changes

Found out over the weekend that my blog change a few months back did not go over so well. There is a little problem scrolling through past posts and longer posts. So until I can figure out how to fix that its back to the old format.

Sorry.

Best Call Me Maybe Yet?

I know there has been a lot of parody videos lately of that song that nobody can get out of their heads.... yes that one called "Call Me Maybe". Well out of all of them, the best one I have seen so far is the one released by the girl herself.... with some help from Jimmy Fallon and the Roots.

They are killing it on the mini instruments. ha.

Need a Smile?

You're Welcome.

The Most Famous Crosswalk

These next series of photos have made me laugh. When I was in London, I had one thing on my agenda. To find Abbey Road and to walk the crosswalk just like the Beatles did. After a day of begging when we were finally going to get to go, I accomplished my dream and my vacation was saved.

These next series of pictures are from both tributes and parody's of that famous Beatles album.

This one could be my favorite.

Phish w/ Kenny Rogers

Phish treated the fans watching the live feed last night to a treat..... Yes that is Kenny Rogers... and yes he came out to play with the band. It was awesome.

Also here is the set list from last nights show:

Setlist:

Couch Tour Upgrade!

Hello and welcome back to yet another week. Hope everyone had a nice relaxing weekend and stayed out of the heat down here in Richmond, from what I hear it was a scorcher.

I spent my weekend running around my old stomping grounds up in New Jersey. Numerous people to see, many fun things to do. It was a great trip, but like many of my trips up north it was entirely too short.

While up there my Dad and Step-Mom decided to give me my birthday present early... yay for a new Ipad. I have no idea how it works, but I'm sure after a few days of playing with it I'll have it up like a pro.

Last night I did its first test and watched the Phish live stream from Bonnaroo on it. (Yes it makes dancing around your living room so much easier). This upgrade for my couch tour is much welcomed.

Also on the ride home yesterday I had a chance to listen to the June 7th Worchester show and it was pretty amazing. Especially the following Boogie On jam. Worth the listen! Only a week or so until I am back seeing them live. Yay.

Again, Happy Monday!
