This is easily the saddest post I have written in a while. One of my favorite soul singers, Etta James, died this morning at the age of 73.
Throughout her long storied career, James overcame a heroin addiction, opened for the rolling stones, won six Grammys and was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite her many ups and downs including a number of health problems, she always maintained a sunny optimistic attitude. She will always be remembered as an icon of mid century soul. RIP Ms. James.
"You can't fake this music. You might be a great singer or a great musician but in the need, that's got nothing to do with it. It's how you connect to the songs and to the history behind them."
