Hope I Die Before I Get Old....

Well that title can not ring more true after that lack luster half time Super Bowl performance by The Who. Can we even call them that anymore, because as far as I'm concerned the heart and soul of that band died with Keith Moon in 1978. Today NPR has raised the question of how long does a band continue to go after a founding member passes away? I think its a brilliant question with no right answer. Its hard to tell when is the right time to call it quits, but warning to all the bands out there. You do not want to end up like The Who on Sunday.

Blues and jazz artists tend to get a break when it comes to getting older, as do country stars with Willie Nelson a proven example. But rock stars are supposed to stay young forever, which is why Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and others have been in an age defying race to dye their hair, stay fit and trim and turn their fans back to their glorious youth each time they hit the stage. Those three manage to pull it off because their voices have withstood the test of time. Daltrey, on the other hand who has admittedly struggled with his voice in recent years, sounded just terrible.

Above you see a band, young, in its prime. Able to bust out some of the greatest songs of all time. (Yes, I have a certain favor towards the early works of this band, its my Dads all time favorites and I have vivid memories of him teaching me some Keith Moon drum sections on the dashboard of our car). So if you did watch on Sunday, you would have seen the two surviving members, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, play a "bordering-on delusional" medley of its greatest hits. Performing as caricatures of their former selves. They tried bringing out the "Tommy" glasses, or Pete tried to do his signature windmill guitar moves. They tried. They failed.

So really, please give it up before you erase your own legacy.

Okay don't believe me? Judge for yourself! And yes Pete is definitely trying to rock that hat...sigh.
